Arrowhead Ranch Water Reclamation Facility WAS Line Rehabilitation CMAR
Project Owner: City of Glendale
Project Type: Construction Manager at Risk
Construction Dates: 09/20 to 02/21
This award-winning project rehabilitated nearly 15,000 LF of existing 6” ductile iron pipe waste activated sludge (WAS) line from the Arrowhead Ranch Water Reclamation Facility south to Union Hills Drive, then east to 67th Avenue, and then south to a discharge manhole near Bell Road. Primus Line was the preferred rehabilitation material due to its lower cost versus dig and replace, greatly reduced traffic and public access impacts, and full life cycle expectancy rehabilitation results. To date this is the largest and most complex Primus Line installation project in the United States at 14,865 feet of liner installed. The longest continuous section installed on this project was 1,620 feet.
Achen-Gardner also removed 13 existing manholes and replaced them with vaults and air valves for pipeline access and maintenance. Scope also included more than 400 SY of PCCP pavement replacement in ADOT right of way. During construction, crews performed a hauling operation to keep the WAS flowing while we cleaned and rehabilitated the pipeline. This hauling operation was performed in close coordination with City staff to maximize efficiency of hauling and preserve vital treatment plant operations.
The team successfully completed a challenging project that met and exceeded the City of Glendale’s goals and expectations. This included:
Extending the life cycle of the pipeline while maximizing the performance and confidence in compliance.
Maximizing the ease of operations and maintenance.
Minimizing interruptions and impacts to the ARWRF and the citizens and communities along the project.
Completing the project one month before the anticipated substantial completion date and two months before the final completion requirement.
