ZONE 1 Transmission Main Assessment and rehabilitation CMAR

Project Owner: Town of Gilbert
Project Type: Construction Manager at Risk
Construction Dates: 09/21 to 05/22

The transmission main that runs from the North Water Treatment Plant west to Cooper Road along the Western Powerline Trail and Western Canal is critical to the Town’s Zone 1 water system, which includes much of the northwest part of the Town and the vibrant Heritage District. As part of this project we assessed, rehabilitated, and repaired this transmission main. This consisted of removing and replacing sections totaling more than 270 feet of large diameter (24” and 36”) bar-wrapped concrete cylinder pipe (CCP) and more than 30 valves. Much of this work was completed along the Western Canal and close to high-tension Salt River Project (SRP) overhead power lines, requiring close communication with SRP and stakeholders who walk and bike on the Western Powerline Trail.

In the early phases of the project, the team used a leak detection system that sent a small ball down the pipe and out through a fire hydrant. The ball contained acoustic sensors, which were used to identify where there were leaks along the pipe. Later in the project, a robotic device was also used to travel the pipe and look for defects by using a combination of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and electromagnetic scanning technology. These innovative uses of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) helped pinpoint areas where repairs were needed, and avoid unnecessary excavation and replacement of pipe that was functioning properly.
