Arrowhead Water Production Facility Rehabilitation and Pecos Surface Water Treatment Plant Surge System DBB

Project Owner: City of Chandler
Project Type: Design-Bid-Build
Construction Dates: 12/21 to 07/22

This project was a continuation of the Public Works & Utilities Department's ongoing initiative to modernize and rehabilitate the City's older water production facilities and replace aging pipe infrastructure. Work was conducted at two locations:

The Arrowhead Water Production Facility (WPF) was constructed in 1988. Inspections identified the need to replace the existing pumps and corroded pump cans and piping, improve the facility building, and upgrade the electrical system. As part of this work we removed and replaced the service entrance section, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, programmable logic controller and other controls, vertical turbine pumps and pump cans, and suction and discharge piping. We replaced the existing diesel generator with a new natural gas powered generator. The building got a new roof with access hatches, a new restroom, new HVAC, plumbing and fire systems, and an architectural facelift. We also replaced more than 2,200 feet of 12” pipe from the Arrowhead WPF south to Chandler Boulevard.

The Pecos Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) was put into service in 1989. The 2018 Water, Wastewater, and Reclaimed Water Master Plan included the recommendation for installation of a surge suppression system at the Pecos Salt Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) to mitigate pressure fluctuations, which can make the distribution system more susceptible to main breaks. This portion of the project included tapping the existing plant distribution line, installation of a surge tank, air compressor, and other necessary appurtenances. We replaced the check valves on the existing Finish Water Pump Station to improve functionality and eliminated an ongoing maintenance issue.
